Virginia’s January traffic deaths numbered 74 to mark a substantial reduction from the 92 of January 1971, reports Col. H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police.
Colonel Burgess said that while it is far too early to make any prediction, the reduction raises hopes for the third consecutive year in which Virginia traffic fatalities will be reduced. There were 1,304 in 1969, 1,231 in 1970 and 1,212 in 1971.
Acknowledging ever increasing official and citizen action in the field of traffic safety promotion, he said the drastic reduction is difficult to explain. “December 1971 set an all time high of 117 deaths for the month and this was largely attributed to the month’s long stretches of mild weather. Yet January 1972 was marked by similar stretches,” he noted.
