A FRIEND OF mine told me a few days ago that he thought we were right on the verge of a religious revolution. Or was it a rebellion? There seems very little distinction between the two. Since then, 1 have been pondering his statement. What is there to rebel about in one’s religious beliefs? Mine are about as unorthodox as they come, yet 1 maintain that it is my right to believe as God gives me belief to believe in. There was a time when the church had so much power it ran the government according to its own dictates. That time is past, we can now worship God in any manner we choose. Whittier in his “Eternal Goodness” says: “But still my human hands are weak “To hold your iron creeds: “The Lord is God! He needeth not “The poor device of man.” He also says that man cannot fix with any known boundaries the love and power of God. Maybe we should revise some of our ways of thinking along religious lines, but rebellions usually destroy. BACK IN the horse and buggy days we had such expressions as: “Put your shoulder to the wheel.” “Lean into it.” Or maybe, “Carry your own weight.” Most of the time we would get things done with just our own efforts. It is surprising at the power we poor humans can use when we know how and try hard enough. 1 think the following lines are by Millay. — You say the little efforts that 1 make Will do no good: they never will prevail To tip the hovering scale Where Justice hangs in balance. 1 don’t think 1 ever thought they would. But 1 am prejudiced beyond debate In favor of my right to choose which side Shall feel the stubborn ounces of my weight.” SO, IF you feel like rebelling, rebel against the negative and accent the positive. If you must throw your weight around, put it into an effort to promote God’s Kingdom. — J.B.P.
