Nine turkeys bagged
THE SPRING TURKEY season which opened April 22 has produced nine turkeys so far. Six gobblers have been checked at Flint Hill. Checking turkeys at Bradfords Store were Charles Foster, Gavor Foster and Donnie Welch of Flint Hill; Doug Calhoun and Silas Foster of Front Royal and John M. Clark, Jr. of Sperryville.
Mrs. Lottie Moss checked a gobbler at Williams Grocery at Chester Gap that was killed in Warren County. Clyde Pullen of Washington checked a gobbler at Baldwins Grocery and Farrell Nicholas of Amissville checked a bearded hen at Jenkins Esso.
Reports from hunters the first week seem to indicate there is much less gobbling than usual so far. The reason may be that with the cool spring, the mating season isn’t at its peak yet. If this is the case, hunting should improve as the season goes along. The last day will be May 13.
Another reason may be that the gobblers are getting with a hen or hens right after coming off the roost. Even so it appears Rappahannock County is having one of its better seasons with kills being reported over a larger area of the county lhan in past years. □
