HAVE YOU NOTICED that some of the roads are cleaner now? No, it is not due to any reformation of the class of people who caused the condition in the first place. Class means position, caste or rank. Now there is a word, rank; could you call certain people rank?

It seems that the terms litterbugs, beer-hounds or some such terminology is too tame. How about roadhogs? Back in the days of very narrow roads and you met a driver who wanted his half of the road right down the center, you referred to him as a road-hog.

A hog is a messy animal, a person who makes a mess is a messy animal, also. Would it be too severe to put them in the swine species? I don’t want to be unkind, but you who offend in this way, if the shoe fits, wear it.

According to $ome psychologists this lack of ecological pride is bred into the very young, mostly in the home. Have you ever been in a home that if a pig should walk in, he would walk right out again? In the dining room there are dirty plates with crumbs around them and on the floor beneath. The living room is a shambles, shoes and papers all over. In the bedrooms, beds unmade, linen looks as if it had not been changed in months.

Is it a young girl’s room? WOW! Do the young people fall in love with these messy conditions and want to share them with others when they grow up? I, for one, am not favorably impressed. Can the responsibility be placed entirely on the young people? No, it is mostly adults who litter the roadways.

Litterbuggery even extends into the churches, bulletins left on the pews or on the floor; sometimes you will see a hymnal on the floor. Too much trouble to pick it up? A den used to be referred to as the lair of a wild animal with all the attendant accumulation of said beast. I wonder if the Christus should walk into some of our churches today, would He exclaim in disgust, “You have made MY FATHER’S HOUSE A DEN!” ? □
