The murder and life sentence verdicts came after two and a half hours of deliberation by the jury following the trial which lasted over seven hours. Among the battery of witnesses was former Rappahannock Sheriff Charles K. Estes who, identified photographs of the car where the shooting reportedly occurred. He said he had observed Smith driving the vehicle many times with Campbell as a passenger, and had stopped them on numerous occasions, twice on July 1, 1971 and found a .22 caliber rifle in their possession.
An FBI special agent, a firearms specialist, testified that the bullet in Womack’s body and cartridges found in the car were .22 caliber long rifle rounds and were fired from an auto-loading gun.
