On being 'exempt’

. .AND SPEAKING OF BEING open to strong arguments, we’d like to hear some further discussion about the decision of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection to seek,, successfully, tax-exempt status.

A member complained the other night, when this was announced, that the RLEP might lose some of its effectiveness by having to agree not to “try and influence legislation.” What is an organization like the RLEP worth if it doesn’t try to influence legislation? was the question asked.

It’s a good question, and one that we feel deserves attention. Acquisition of a fat, tax exempt, treasury to use for “educational purposes” may be - nice, but really “influencing legislation” — for the better — can be even nicer. □
