Both schools in Rappahannock County were burglarized Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. The vandalism was discovered as school personnel arrived to begin the day’s work.
Alvin Atkins, custodian at the high school, found evidence of rummaging and ransacking when he arrived for work. Further investigation disclosed every nook and cranny had been poked into and every drawer had been opened. Coin boxes on vending machines had been pried open and the contents removed.
An estimated $30 might have been garnered by the vandals from all sources including $3 which Edward Gray, science instructor, had in his desk drawer.
Vandalism consisted of the prying open of doors where locks were destroyed and will have to be replaced and a door glass knocked out to gain entry to the building.
At the local elementary school the story was much the same. Any cabinet or room which had been locked was pried open. The kitchen and cafeteria were not bothered and according to Mrs. Mary Quaintance, most of the inside doors are not locked because of just such activities. No appreciable amount of money is kept in the schools.
It appeared evident that money was the object Of ^ > * the break-in for machines, a Camera and other items were left untouched. In the high school vo-ag shop some small welding equipment was taken.
