Fact vs. fiction
THE NORTHERN Virginia Builders Association, Inc., is currently conducting a Campaign designed to convince everyone in Northern Virginia that growth is good for you — the more of it you have, the better! The organization has taken out advertisements, had “fact” folders printed and distributed, and (apparently) made sure that sympathetic publicists have been properly fed.
One document recently distributed in Fauquier County includes this statement: “Citizens are not paying higher local taxes because of growth. What they really are paying for is the higher quality and greater range of services their local government is providing them . . . Growth nelps keep tax rates down for both new and longtime residents. In addition, the costs of building new public facilities cannot all be blamed upon additional population. These expenditures also provide improved services and facilities demanded by the present residents.”
