In those years Rappahannock County was full of good people who worked hard. They shared with one another and the family and community ties were much stronger than they are today. Few people were coming into the County.
THE OWNERSHIP of land rarely changed unless a death occured and then the land passed on to members of the family. Mountain land was available for a few dollars per acre and the most productive land in the county could be purchased for $45-50 dollars per acre.
Today Rappahannock County is different. Little of the steep land is cropped today. Lime, fertilizer, machinery and time have healed over most of man’s mistakes but new hazards threaten our county.
Our biggest enemy is that many of the local people are too complacent with the idea that community or county problems are someother person’s business.
