small farms. Farming was unspecialized and most farms had orchards and raised corn, small grain and hay. Sheep, hogs, cattle, and horses were abundant in the county but farming was not an easy life. The only real security against hunger was a strong back and a determined will to succeed.

Products sold from the farm brought low prices. The discouraging thing about farming was that the steep slopes and shallow soil on most of the Rappahannock hills could be cropped only a few years before they became eroded and unproductive. Lime and fertilizer were difficult to obtain.
