The latest information on corn weed control is available in your Extension Office. Just ask for Allan Kates’, V.P.I. Weed Control Specialist, publication Corn Weed Control Series 36. It is concise, complete, and contains the latest recommendations for Sod Planting, Pre-emergence and Post-emergence weed control. Included is a chart rating the different chemical materials on effectiveness of controlling specific major weeds in corn.
WHILE WE ARE ON the subject of corn, home vegetable gardeners might like to try several rows of the Sun Glow variety. Lewis Moore introduced me to this variety several years ago. It is short stalked and doesn’t look like much, but the kernels are large in relationship to the cob, the flavor is delicious, it freezes well, and best of all, it ripens about ten days before most other varieties.
If you like a real sweet, sweet corn, try one of the Extra Sweet varieties, such as Illini Extra Sweet. Taste like someone sprinkled sugar over it. It is too sweet for my taste but it is a favorite of many gardeners.
