The Virginia Department of Agriculture ana commerce and Food and Drug Administration are expanding their programs to include on-farm inspection to determine if producers are using feeds containing feed additives in accordance with label directions. While on the farm, the inspector will check to see that the mill has provided the required labeling to the farmer and if the farmer has posted or filed their label where it can be referred to frequently for proper use, storage and handling procedures of the feed, as well as to determine if warning or withdrawal times are being observed. He will also check to see if agricultural chemicals, including pesticides are stores so that they are not likely to contaminate feed or water. This program will get underway about May 15, 1973.
A recent Occupational Safety and Health Standard becomes effective June 18, 1973, that will primarily effect commercial orchardists in our area. The standard lists the number of days that must elapse before a farm employee can re-enter an orchard that has been treated with an organophosphorus pesticide. There are 21 such pesticides listed with varying time elapse re-entry periods. Many of these are in common usage in the county.
