Nine turkeys bagged
THE 1973 SPRING TURKEY season ended with nine turkeys being killed in Rappahannock. Bradford’s Store at Flint Hill checked six of these, including a second gobbler taken by Sherman Atkins and one by A. M. Pennington of Washington. Elmer Jenkins at Amissville checked two. One of those was taken in Fauquier County. Mrs. Sherman Williams at Chester Gap checked two. The second one was an 18 1/2 pound gobbler killed in Fauquier by William Cameron, Jr. One turkey killed here was checked out of the county. This spring’s kill was about half of that a year ago when 17 turkeys were repoted killed in Rappahannock. Apparently many counties in the state are going to be down from last year’s kill figures, some by as much as half as was the case here. The cool rainy weather was probably the biggest factor in poor hunting. This, however, should not affect this year’s hatch at this point. The critical period should be from now through the next few weeks when hatching and the first days of rearing will
occur. •
