As an example if an apple orchard is sprayed with Parathion, the orchard must be posted and employees warned in a prescribed manor not to enter the orchard for five days. The State Air Pollution Control Board has beefed up its manpower and Rappahannock is now monitored on a regular basis. Restrictions on open burning will in all probability be more rigidly enforced. Most open burning for forestry or agricultural practices must have prior approval. The burning of rubber tires, asphaltic materials, crankcase oil, impregnated wood or similar materials which produce dense smoke shall not be permitted.
State Water Control Law and its application to agriculture in Rappahannock will have little effect at present. Primarily these laws are aimed at preventing run off from heavy concentration of livestock in limited areas such as dairy loafing barns, beef feed lots and hog parlors, from entering springs, streams and rivers.
Swine and beef producers who concentrate relative, large numbers of livestock in small feed lots with springs or streams running through could be headed for trouble. Also, extreme care should be taken to prevent flushing of spray tanks or the discarding of pesticide containers intoor near streams.
