Parkway carries furniture as well as smaller novelties and gifts, and a sign at the entrance promises “We deliver anywhere within 100 miles.” But they have been delivering a lot less.
“We used to have three loads a week,” says Betty Nester, “heading into Arlington, Fairfax and Dale City. But our last shipment was the Saturday before Christmas.” Her husband added, “There just aren’t as many people coming through and they aren’t buying as much.”
The Parkway Gift Shop complex includes a Gulf station. “We didn’t sell that first Sunday (when the President requested volunatry gas station closings) but we’ve been open ever since,” Nester admitted.
Mrs. Nester noted that weekday sales have been affected by the “shortage” too. “My husband and I are the only ones here now. We used to have four other part-time people during the week.” See Page 14
