THERE IS A TIME to be born and a time to die. You might be listed in the birth announcements of your local paper, then again in the obituary column; the interval in between is what we are concerned about today. Some poet asks “how did you die? Let’s ask ourselves how will we live. This new year will be a period of adjustments. How will we live; will we selfishly store up things and let others suffer or will we use things sparingly and’leave some for the next person. A local prophet has predicted that there will be dire needs, that some will take things by force, that the law of tooth and claw will prevail. Let us hope that it will not be that bad. I think we have just been living too high on the hog, maybe we need to be taught to appreciate the pig footsies and the chit’lings. The Book says that all things work for good to those who love the Lord. Maybe we need to be humbled.
And, if worse comes to worse, we will have to make the necessary adjustments. As a people, I don’t think we will take too much greed lying down; so let those who think they can impose on others beware.
If the powers that be have determined that these are the ‘end times’, let us as take the advice of Bryant in his Thanatopsis and approach that end—
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
