THE FIRST polo game Bill Fannon ever watched was also the first polo game he ever played, in. That was at Farmington on July 3,1971. The following spring he started building a polo field on his own farm in Rappahannock.
Polo, especially in this area, is usually played during the day on a grass field. But Fannon figured he and other Rappahannock riders who’d be playing with him would never be able to take up the sport unless they could practice at night. So he built a lighted arena.
Polo clubs from throughout Virginia have been hosted by the Rappahannock team at Fannon’s field throughout the summer. A Cincinnati team found its way into the hills of Rappahannock when they made a playing tour of polo clubs in the East, and Fannon is expecting a British team on Friday, September 26, at 8 p.m.
