The ball is much like a miniature soccer ball, and larger than the hard willow wood ball used for outdoor polo. There are three players when the game is played in an arena and four for outdoors.

“THE INDOOR game is a lot more demanding,” Fannon said. “There’s more frequent stopping and turning and the play reverses hands more often. And all the while, you have to be fast.

“Indoor or outdoor polo requires a rider in ready control of his horse, prepared to stop, change direction at a gallop. He must also have a dexterous hand on his mallet and a confident seat, so that he can lean and shift his position in order to strike at the ball. The game is even more demanding
