When six horses are simultaneously in pursuit of one small ball, collisions are inevitable. So most of the rules of the game are designed to prevent injury to horse and rider. The player following the ball has the right of way and no player can position his horse to block a rider. Players can play off the horse’s right of left side or under his neck.
The referee is also mounted and trots along, keeping up with the action. Referee for Rappahannock is Colonel Billy West of Warrenton, a former member of the U.S. Olympic polo team.
Each polo player is rated with a handicap, between zero and ten goals, which reflect the number of goals they can be expected to make during a game. The combined total is the team handicap.
