legislators and I am opposed to this bill, as well as any increase in salaries. Expenses to reimburse for the approximate amount of expenses normally incurred while in Richmond or for additional staff for the legislative committees may be justifiable, but an increase in legislator’s salaries is absolutely contrary to the need to hold state appropriations in line with revenues in order to balance the budget and avoid deficit financing.
Such a salary increase would also be a step towards a full-time legislature to which I am opposed. I believe Virginia will be better served by having part-time members of the legislature who spend by far the greater parf; of their time in their home communities and earning their living from some other occupation. This way I think we have fewer unnecessary laws and a better understanding by the legislators of the needs and views of the public.
