WHEAT SCAB—The incidence of scab or Fusarium blight on wheat is much higher than normal this year. The long period of wet cloudy weather during the bloom period was favorable for the development and spread of this fungus type disease. In some fields nearly every head of wheat has at least several grains that. appear to be prematurely ripened, when the husk is picked off there is either no grain or the grain is shriveled. If you look close you will . find light pink colored spore masses along the base of the affected husks.
The scab fungus can be carried on uncleaned or untreated seed, or over winter on old corn stalks, straw or grass.
TWILIGHT ORCHARD MEETING—Commercial apple and peach growers are invited to Alvin Meadow’s orchard in Criglesville, Wednesday evening, June 18.
