RAPPAHANNOCK hounds, locally bred in the most part from fast-running Walker strains and old time Bywaters blood lines, range much farther afield from their capable Rappahannock-born huntsman, Jimmie Dodson, and tend to hunt more independently than do the Georgia hounds.
On the last day of the Challenge, right to the very end of the tourney, Georgia nounds were ahead by three runs on reds and a flawless performance in regard to deer, while Rappahannock hounds had to be broken off deer one time.
However, the score was evened at the last minute when Rappahannock hounds closed in at the foot of Fielding mountain for an instant kill just before a downpour.
Results of the four-day hunting contest: six red foxes run to earth, one killed, ten deer seen, two delighted Masters of Foxhounds, and incontrovertible proof that “deerproof hounds” exist.—Mary Jamieson
