FARFELU is primarily a family operation. Lou Raney and the children have all put in long hours with the vines. “We’ve done almost all the work,” maintained Charles. “We used a little sucker, trellis and picking labor but that’s about it. Our oldest son Mike stayed out a year between high school and college. He did all the pruning last year.”
The Raney’s oldest daughter, Mauri Payne studied horticulture with emphasis on grafting techniques at VPI. Although married and no longer living at home, she still spends hours atFarfelu adding her knowledge to her father’s hardearned expertise.
“We toured the vineyards in San Fran and Charles got the bug,” said Lou of the start of the Raney interest in a winery. Charles thought it began long before, dur£ m -wii n.
