THE growing of high quality wine grapes in Virginia is still in experimental stages. Due to the climate here, the vines are susceptable to several fungus diseases, noted Raney. The dry spell in May didn’t bother the Raneys at all. “I’d be tickled pink if we had no rain from June to September,” said Charles. He follows a fungus prevention program that requires regular spraying with Sevin.
According to Charles, new growth and rain are the determing factors in spraying frequency. “Sometimes you have to be out there spraying while the rain is still coming down.”
