Assistant Superintendent T. A. Fleetwood explained that the county sought the federally funded program after standardized testing showed a disparity between the students’ abilities and reading achievement levels. But, according to Fleetwood, the search for a qualified teacher to administer die program was more difficult and took longer than locating the funding.
The administration had decided a man would be better for the job in view of the discipline difficulties that most problem readers presented, according to Fleetwood. ■ » • . .
Applicants were interviewed throughout the summer with no luck until Karl Studt applied. Fleetwood feels that Studt was well worth the wait and effort. Besides holding a Batchelor of Science degree from VPI, Studt’s Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Virginia includes a major in reading and instruction in the University’s McGuffey Reading Clinic.
There are no learning disabled children involved in the reading lab work. “It’s not like they can’t learn,” said Fleetwood. “All the students in the program have the capacity to be good, average readers and are working below their capabilities.”
