The tests in English Composition, Social Studies, Natural Science, Literature and Mathematics are designed to measure the major skills that result from four-year high school curriculum.
By achieving satisfactory scores on GED tests adults may earn a high school equivalency certificate; qualify for admission to college or advanced educational opportunities; meet educational requirements for employment or promotion; satisfy educational qualifications for induction in the United States Armed Forces.

An applicant must be at least Id. Under special circumstances which are considered justifiable by local school authorities, the age limit may be lowered. Applicants must have been a physical resident of Virginia thirty days prior to applying for testing.
