The Virginia Division of Forestry reports that a wildfire on Fork Mountain in Madison County last Sunday burned over a considerable acreage of Game Commission land. County Forester, Lyt Wood, estimated that the fire burned approximately 160 acres before it was contained. The Fork Mountain fire was entirely within the boundaries of the Rapidan Wildlife Management Area.
Initial report of the fire was made at 10:15 a.m. last Sunday by Douglas Ryder, who operates the Division of Forestry tower <mi Blakey Ridge. The fire was in a remote area and covered steep and rocky terrain; more than 60 fire fighters helped with the suppression effort.
