MANY OF OUR SMALL GRAIN FIELDS are in sad shape this spring. Due to late planting and the prolonged cold winter many wheat and barley fields didn’t sprout until mid March. Some wheat is still germinating. The big question is what to do now? Normally, if you wind up with a mediocre stand in February, you can top dress with nitrogen and each individual wheat plant will put out four to six tillers. These tillers will fill in the bare areas and will still produce a decent yield. Since amount of tillering is controlled by day length, long days result in reduced tillering, I don’t believe you can expect much tillering from plants that emerged in late March. If you have a poor stand looks to me like these are your options:
1. Overseed with grass and clover. If wheat is worth combining, do so. If not, cut wheat and weeds for hay.
2. Delay one more week and then make a decision. If stand is still too poor, disc and seed to corn. Most of the fertilizer sown last November should still be available for this years corn crop.
FRUIT GROWERS—starting with the first Wednesday in April and continuing each Wednesday through the first of June you are invited to tour a designated grower’s orchard with fruit specialist, Ed Phillips and Bob Horsburgh. We will meet at the host orchard at 11 a.m. Bring your own bag lunch. Inspect the orchard and discuss pest control recommendations. Eat lunch together at Noon. Host furnishes drinks. Be on your way home by 12:30 p.m. This will give you the opportunity to see what other growers are doing. Keep up to date on current disease and insect problems. And discuss your own situation with the specialists.
