Smoot elected
E. Douglas Smoot of Culpeper has been elected president of the Virginia State Feed Association. He was chosen at the group’s annual business meeting during the 31st Virginia Feed Convention and Nutrition Conference at the Homestead here.
Smoot, assistant general manager of Culpeper Farmers Cooperative, succeeds C.F. (Jack) Booth of Harrisonburg.
Unanimous resolutions adopted by the Association “strongly urged the immediate funding of new diagnostic laboratory facilities for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce at Ivor and Harrisonburg and the new animal science building’ ’ at Virginia Tech. The need for all these facilities has been demonstrated amply, the resolutions said.
Other resolutions urged the State Council of Higher Education to approve quickly the establishment of the school of veterinary medicine at Virginia Tech; saluted the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce on its centennial celebration, urging that the Department’s integrity be maintained by the General Assembly; commended VDAC and Virginia Tech personnel on helping get a landmark regulations passed on dried poultry waste as a commercial feed ingredient, and decried the “growing intrusions of government at all levels into the management of private business and our personal lives.’’
The Association asked Congress and the Virginia General Assembly, as well as other elected and appointed officials, to review existing regulations and consider all proposed regulations in light of “real costs and real benefits.”
