James Jessup, supervisor of the local state police arson investigation unit, said on Tuesday that his men are still gathering evidence in the Sperryville area. Asked if the unit was also looking into the fire which destroyed 40 hay bales in a field near Washington Saturday night. Jessup said the incident had not been reported to his office.
Rappahannock deputy John Henry Woodward who visited the scene Saturday night while Jack DeBergh’s hay bales were still burning said it appeared the fire had been set. According to sheriff W. A. Buntin, his office has not received a request to investigate the incident.
