Col. McNear, in issuing the building permit, understood the addition would be attached to the Burkes’ house.
Supervisor Luke questioned the logic of allowing an addition with a building permit while requiring a special use permit for the same structure if it is just ten feet away and not attached. He expressed doubt that the county would ever find means to control the type of unauthorized construction which occurs when a landowner applies for a building permit for an addition and then changes his mind and builds a separate dwelling.
Approving a second house for Burke’s lot would be detrimental only if he split off and tried to sell the second dwelling, according to Gardiner. “It appears to me that we need to be more specific on the building permits,” the chairman added, however.
