culture. "One of his biggest contributions has been to the fun of Rappahannock," said Elisabeth Johnson, recalling the 21 years of July 4th fireworks on the grounds of Avon Hall.
"It’s been a spectacular thing for the town,” added Washington councilwoman Dorothy Hawkins. “And it’s just meant so much for all the people of the county. I think Mr. Carrigan is such a wonderful person. He’s so good. He’s given his whole hearted support every time he’s been asked."
The fireworks that have delighted local residents and visitors, young and old, have been more than just entertainment. They’ve served as a center for the town’s old fashioned Independence Day Fair, an event that has brought hundreds of dollars in to support Washington’s Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, county groups such as the Panther Athletic League and 4-H Clubs and the town’s churches.
Religion plays an important part in William Carrigan’s life- The hand that has gone out to assist other religious groups helped provide a house of ownership here for members of his own Catholic church.
