One of the first fitness courses in the United States was built in Idaho with help from Forest Service staff and another early course was designed by a Forest Service employee while a student at the University of Montana.
Literature explaining the concept of a fitness trail notes that the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports encourages construction of courses across the U. S.
According to Baumgardner, the fitness trail will begin at the rec center pavilion, continue clockwise along the river bank and then wind back up to the pavilion. It will include seven dual • exercise stations (see drawing), each with a by-pass , for those who want to use the trail for running only.
To date, Baumgardner has completed a topgraphic map of the new park and an overlay of the proposed master plan. It shows a gravel parking lot in front of the pavilion. Behind the building will be two asphalt surface tennis courts lined and sealed with a color coast, a clay surface volley ball court and an aspahlt surface basketball court constructed to collegiate specifications. A .14 mile trail will lead down to two picnic areas with tables at the edge of the river.
