to come to Washington in July, 1979. for mass held in the annex of the old Washington school. Over 100 people attended, convincing the Bishop that the county had enough Catholic residents to justify celebrating mass every Sunday. In August, Father DuCastillon began saying mass regularly at the annex in the name of the Bishop and in June. 1981, the annex officially became St. Peter s Mission.
“Mr. Carrigan has done wonderful things for us." Father DuCastillon said. "He donated the use of his building to the church. He’s an excellent man...a special, special gentleman."
Kind, generous, fair, giving—these were the words used over and over again by friends and acquaintances to describe Bill Carrigan. Dorothy Hawkins remembered a perfect example of the warmth he and his wife Ramona have shown to county people. The Carrigans donated Avon Hall for the Rappahannock house tour one year. ‘‘Both Mr. and Mrs. Carrigan took the time to say'something special to almost everyone who came through the door.
