At its December meeting, Washington’s Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad elected officers for the coming year.
Serving in 1982 are: president Gene Leggett, vicepresident Jenks Hobson, fire chief Roger Roach, assistant fire chiefs Jackie Estes and Bruce Critzer, fire lieutenant Steve Critzer, treasurer Sarah Roach, secretary Ruth Noce, rescue captain Brad Fisher and rescue lieutenant Mary Bailey.
A special committee of Roger Roach, Jackie Estes and Steve Critzer with Brad Fisher as chairman was appointed to evaluate ambulances considered for purchase with the $20,000 recently awarded the company in a Rescue Squad Assistance Fund grant.
The committee will contact vendors for specifications on basic life support ambulances, focusing particularly on off-road maneuverability, and will then solicit bids, according to Leggett.
Through the competitive bidding process, he explained, the fire company hopes to bring the price of the equipment, normally around $30,000, down to $25,000. With the 80-20 percent matching grant, that will leave $5,000 as the local share of the cost of the new ambulance.
Leggett noted that the WVFD will start its annual fund drive next week. In addition to the $5,000 match for the ambulance, the company must raise about $20,000 for annual operating expenses (insurance premiums, gas, fuel oil. replacement and repairs of equipment) and an unspecified amount to finish the new fire house.
Correction
The Rappahannock News reported in an article carried in its December 17 issue that new zoning administrator David Konick was appointed to his post in a split vote by the supervisors. The final vote taken by the supervisors in open session after an executive meeting was unanimous in naming Konick as zoning administrator-building officials.
