Score High
Wakefield School in Huntly reports that its students have scored high in the PSAT-NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test-National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) given nationally in October.
According to Wakefield headmaster William Lynn, over half of the 30 Wakefield juniors who took the test scored in the national percentile ranks of 90 or above in the Verbal section of the exam. The overall national percentile ranking for Wakefield’s Junior class was 85 in Verbal and 70 in Math. A national percentile rank of 85, Lynn explains, means that only 15 percent of the nation's juniors scored higher.
Wakefield’s sophomores and freshmen also took the test for practice although only the scores of juniors count for the National Merit Scholarship competition. According to Lynn, 19 of Wakefield’s 33 sophomores scored in the 90 percentile ranks in the Verbal and Math sections, and rather surprisingly, over one-third of Wakefield’s 33 freshmen received raw scores in the verbal and match sections which would have earned them national percentile rankings of 90 or above on the junior scale.
On the basis of the scores, Lynn predicts that at least six Wakefield juniors will be named National Merit semifinalists or commended students for 1981-82, more than a good showing for a school of Wakefield’s size.
The most gratifying statistics of all, Lynn said, were the ones which showed that 13 juniors who entered Wakefield over a year ago improved their scores from the test given in October of 1980 by a total of 573 percentage points.
