“Write about who got married, who had the baby, who’s been divorced,” he said, explaining most soldiers enjoy a social-type letter. “No matter how many other things they have to make them comfortable, a letter offers a personal touch,” he said.
That personal touch — that simple postcard or greeting card — could cost the sender as little, as 25 cents and boost morale for a soldier for a whole day, a whole week or even a month.
“Mail sent to any fleet post office (FPO) or air post office (APO) box is sent at United States Postal rates,” Robert Faruk of the US Postal Service office at Merrifiold said, explaining postcards, letters and other written material and packages and boxes are charged according to postal rates and should arrive their destination in seven to 10 days.
“With the holidays approaching, people should allow even more time for items to reach their destination,” he said, adding already the volume of mail to the gulf region has seen a “40 percent increase and rising.”
Offering advice for those sending itemSj Mr. Faruk said packages should be marked in legible writing with heavy black or blue ink. Items should be marked inside the package as well as outside, with servicemens’ numbers marked clearly in order to avoid confusion and delays. Senders should refrain from using strings and wrappings as these items often tangle the postal machinery, causing delays and damages.
“Seal boxes with pressure tape with addresses inside and out,” he suggested.
