bushes. These are signs of good weather, with more to come. When the cattle are grazing and moving around, that’s another favorable sign, but when they lie down and face away from the wind, that, of course, foretells rain.

I’ve heard it said in Rappahannock how when the smoke blows down around the house the weather is going to be stormy. I don’t know why this is, but it does seem to be true. Perhaps it is something to do with the white oak that fuels the stoves or fireplaces, or maybe the hilly terrain. Certainly down-blow
