One of the points stressed by Linda Mock and Gary Rafala, counselors at Family Guidance Services of Rappahannock, as they explained depression, is that it is an illness with a biological cause. It is not something to be ashamed of. Many people suffer from it at one time or another.

Another positive aspect is the disease’s high response rate to treatment. More than 80 percent of those who receive treatment find relief. The sad part is that less than half of those who suffer a depressive episode actually seek professional help.

Most depression can be treated on an outpatient basis, usually using some combination of medication and counseling.

If you suffer from depression, or know someone who does, there are agencies in the area which can help.

• Family Guidance Services/Community Mental Health: Units in the five counties served by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Center. All have 24-hour hotline numbers.
