Cost-share signup underway

The Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District is taking applications for its 1991 Chesapeake Bay Cost Share Program. Farmers may sign up at the county ASCS office, located in the Gay St. Theatre in Washington, until Jan. 15. This year, landowners can benefit from a new $5,000 maximum on funding, up from the $3,500 cap in previous years. “Because of “ this unique cost-share program,” said a SWCD spokesman, “there's something you can do about the problems facing our waters.” The program allows farmers “to install conservation practices that protect Virginia's waters and lead to more productive farms.” For more information about eligible practices or how to apply for assistance, contact the SWCD office in -'"Culpeper (703-825-8591).

Slaughter’s rep to visit

Seventh District Congressman D. French Slaughter will send his district representative, Ben Dutton, to visit Rappahannock County on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Mr. Dutton will be at the county courthouse in Washington from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and will be available to speak with constituents who need assistance or have problems of a federal .nature, including Social Security, veteran's affairs, Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor or Immigration and Naturalization Service. Vets’office has toll-free number

The Department of Veterans' Affairs regional office in Roanoke has installed a tpll-free telephone number for Virginia veterans and their dependents. Callers can dial the Roanoke office from anywhere in the Commonwealth at no charge. They will be connected with a benefits counselor who can answer questions regarding benefits and services available to veterans and their dependents. The toll-free number, (800) 827-2018, is in service daily, except federal holidays, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. During the last fiscal year the Roanoke regional office handled more than 153,000 calls from across Virginia on its toll-free telephone lines.
