With no dissent, the Planning Commission recommended that a building in Flint Hill be rezoned from village residential to village commercial.
Robert and Patricia Metcalfe own the property located on the east side of U.S. 522, a little north of the intersection with Route 729. The building has been rented as a house.
Mr. Metcalfe said the he believes the building was built earlier than 1800. He said the most recent survey of the property was in 1818, and that the building was a grainery then. “It’s a log structure on the inside,” he said. “I restored it because I think it’s kind of neat. I want to leave it that way.”
He said he thought a commercial use of the building would be a “better use than a house because it’s so close to the road.”
Under the village commercial zoning the building can be used for up to 2,000 square feet of retail sales , or for offices. County Administrator John McCarthy noted that neighboring property owners had been notified and that he had received no negative comments. ,
Hampton District representative John Clark Jr. asked if the building coilld be put to a use that the neighbors might object to.
Mr. McCarthy said that such uses would require a special use permit or special exception as well as the rezoning.
