If the fire taxes are approved, the monies will have to be kept in a separate account, and the real estate tax rate can be reduced.

Because the law does not allow the county to adopt any tax higher than it is advertised, the advertised rates will be higher than the supervisors expect to approve.

The supervisors are waiting to hear from the public at a public hearing June 5 before deciding whether to support the request of the fire and rescue squads for county monies to cover their operating budgets and/or what taxes to impose to support this increase.

A fire tax on real estate is imposed on total assessments and is not reduced because of land use. As a result a one cent fire tax raises about $75,000 compared to about $51,000 for one cent in regular real estate tax.
