To the Editor:
It appears to me that the slightest scratch or dent inflicted upon any motor vehicle by the driver of another results in the total paralysis of both machines, regardless of inconvenience to other motorists, until a battalion of police and insurance agents has arrived and completed interviews with principals and witnesses, photographed the scene from every angle, and compiled voluminous reports.
In the situation of a single vehicle’s collision with a domestic animal, however, with no damage to the machine, but resulting, nonetheless, in the death of the animal, the driver is required only to stop, say something (anything) to whatever witness there might be, and may then proceed. The police are not required even to make an appearance.
A certain light-duty, flatbed truck has been travelling the Hawlin Road some months now, drive by a woman, although a man is often is the passenger’s seat. The speed of this vehicle has always been excessive, and I have noticed, at least once, when my dogs have been in the road, that the woman has actually accelerated (as evidenced by sight as well as by the distinct increase in the noise of the engine), making no effort toward avoiding the dogs, and giving the impression, rather, that she wouldn’t mind in the least hitting them.
Our two old dogs have always disliked certain vehicles, particularly trucks, and they are apt to chase them, barking their disapproval. Many cars do not offend them, and they are on good terms with certain trucks, as well. These dogs are extremely adept at avoiding contact with the vehicles they pursue.
Recently, we took in two abandoned puppies, about six months old, that had been in the neighborhood a week or so, at the time. I took them to the vet for their shots and whatever else might be necessary, rebuilt an old dog house for one, and converted an old, wooden tank for the other. The
