help pay for his education. Because he was red-shirted his freshman year, he’ll be back playing for the Cavaliers next year and doing graduate work.
“Do black political leaders have a big influence on you?” I asked.
He said he liked Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan. “A lot of what he (Farrakhan) does has some merit. People may not like one thing he says and just dismiss him, but a lot of things he says make sense — he has some good ideas for our community.”
He thinks it’s sad that America is probably getting worse. “Even in the four years I’ve been here, I’ve noticed a greater disparity between people who have a lot of things and people who don’t,” Chris said.
He said he would like to practice business in “a responsible and ethical manner,” while getting involved in whatever community he finds himself in. “I’m going to try to help three or four people along the way. If everybody would do that, we’ll get to where we need to be.”
After the interview Chris invited Gary an me to see the locker rooms. The first room we came to had three couches with a big-screen TV sitting in an entertainment center. The locker rooms were carpeted with pictures of the players hanging up beside their spaces. The showers had a whirlpool.
Then we shot basketball with Chris while someone took pictures. Curtis Staples walked in and started practicing, so we got to shoot hoops with him too.
After I got home, I realized that Chris had influenced me: you can’t expect to have fun without work. Going to U-Hall was the fun part, but writing this story was the working part
