the college recruiting and he said, “1 got recruited by like a hundred different schools. I despised the whole thing. It’s great that people give you attention, but it’s so tedious.” Chris said he had to read through three boxes of college brochures and had to deal with the coaches calling his house, acting like they were his best friend.

He ended up going to UVa because “1 wanted a school where you could combine academics, social life and basketball.” He wanted to go to a NCAA school where there is a large black community.” 1 didn’t want to go somewhere and be the only black person. I didn’t want to be a crusader.”

I asked him if he feels comfortable at UVa.

“Yeah, I do. It’s not Disneyland. We do have problems. It’s something we have to work on, on a daily basis.”

Chris also stated that black students at UVa have government positions. “They have their own little niche; they’re not intimidated.”

“Why did you enroll in the school of commerce?” I asked. I had heard that it was one of the toughest schools at UVa.

Chris said that the commerce degree will tie him to a job coming out of college if his basketball career doesn’t work out. He talked about the keys to academic success: determination, putting off time with his friends until work is finished, and not giving up when it seems like there is too much to do.
