The 1995 RCHS prom was a thrilling and fun evening for about 150 students.
With the theme, “Stairway to Heaven,” it was held at the Bowling Green Country Club South, north of Front Royal, from 8 p.m. to just after midnight.
Most people attending the prom first had dinner in a fine restaurant. Paul Brown and his date Keirsten Kerr, along with friends James Eastham and Nikki Magee, dined at the Wayside Inn in Middletown.
At Ryan Armistead’s house, Ryan and friends Mike Switzer, Luke Zindel, Eddie Sause and Leo Santos cooked and served dinner to their dates, respectively, Natalie Counts, Jessica Arnold, Amy Hathaway, Jaimee Hammit and Katja Valtonen.
The main course, prepared by Ryan, Luke and Eddie, was the French classic, Chicken Cordon Bleu. Served along with the chicken was fruit salad (Ryan and Luke), macaroni salad (Mike), rice (Leo) and homemade rolls (Eddie). The outstanding desserts were chocolate mousse cake (prepared by Mike) and strawberry meringue pie (made by Ryan).
Dinner was served around 8:30, and the couples were later chauffeured to the prom in a limo.
When they arrived at the prom, the party and dancing were already in full swing. Some dancers had already removed their uncomfortable shoes, and just about everyone was up on /the dance floor and enjoying the music. At the beginning of the prom, the slow songs were the most popular, but the DJ, taking requests from the crowd, played the better songs toward the end of the evening.
The prom was organized by the junior class sponsored by Roger FI inchum, Tammy Snider and Liz Hollie. The room was decorated beautifully, with hundreds of black and white balloons, and champagne glasses (as a souvenir of the evening), star confetti, and bottles of Alpenglow on each table.
Even after all that dancing, most of the attendees still had energy for the after-prom party at the Crooked Run Racquet and Fitness Center in Front Royal. According to Kelly Settle, who organized the party along with Susan Fox and Judy Tole, there were 102 at the party.
Cash prizes totalling $500 were given out, along with 125 door prizes. Donations were received by many people and organizations, said Mrs. Settle. * Activities played at the party included basketball, wallyball (volleyball played on a racquetball court), swimming, pool races, limbo and hula hoop contests, and a bubble gum blowing contest.
Mrs. Settle said that about 30 people were still at the after-prom party when it ended at 5 a.m.
