The forum on county roads sponsored by RLEP at the theatre last Thursday was much calmer than the forum hosted by the Board of Supervisors on Monday May 1, but there was still a feeling of frustration.
The crowd was far smaller, probably under 100, and everyone had an opportunity to speak.
Piedmont Environmental Council President Robert Dennis, Milton Hurd, a planner who authored a response to the Kellerco study, and Chris Miller, an attorney who advised PEC on transportation issues related to the Disney project, were panelists. Attorney Allen Olson moderated.
RLEP President Hunt Harris said the purpose of the forum was to begin a “dialog to help assist the Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission in planning our future.”
Mr. Hurd said reviewing the Comprehensive Plan should be a process in “consensus building.” He said it is important to keep the process open and include all viewpoints. He said people need to be both realistic and creative and take a very long term view.
Mr. Dennis said most people in the room were aware of the “costs of growth.” But he said, “Some people make a lot of money off of growth. There are benefits, but a few people share the bulk of the benefits, and we all share the costs.” He said some say the inefficient way urban areas are expanding is reducing America’s competitiveness.
