the past 11 years—helping to raise money for the band program and purchase instruments and music;
• She is the “Greens Chairman” of the Rappahannock Garden Club, and has been for nine years, and takes all the orders for greens each year and makes sure there are enough to go around;
• For the 4-H Club, she handles what they call the junior garden club for children eight to 16 years of age, where they make bird houses, learn about bees and dissect flowers. She also is in charge of a garden group for the week of the 4H camp;
• She is a member of the board of directors for Headwaters, the organization that helps public education here, and at this year’s fall fund raiser could be seen at the registration desk helping guests check in;
• She is a singer in the choir at the Sperryville Methodist Church.
Mrs. Havstad frequently is asked how she does all this. Many people don’t know she is a diabetic.
“I am a diabetic. But I made up my mind that that wasn’t going to keep me from doing what I want to do,” she says. “Doing all this stuff keeps you younger. You are around children and they keep you on your toes.”
What motivates her?
“I just love working with the children. I am really happy when I see them happy.
“And I love music. I really do,” she says, adding she played the piano as a child, from age eight to 16, and has fond memories of playing duets with her mother.
