in dogged pursuit of projects to help the Sherpa people.
Using a strictly grassroots approach, “doing only what the Sherpas wanted us to do,” Hillary has helped the Sherpa community build twenty-six schools, two major hospitals, a number of village health clinics, central water systems in many villages, and new bridges to create accessible routes between villages. A number of Sherpas who were students in the first schools he helped establish have since assumed leadership roles.
Through the work of disciples, such as Mingma Norbu Sherpa, director of the Himalayan Division of the World Wildlife Fund, Hillary has helped the Sherpas find a way to preserve their fragile world without being subjugated to it.
