Rappahannock County Elementary School Assistant Principal Carol Johnson reported to the School Board, at its Dec. 10 meeting, on developments of the Bus Issues Team. The team was created to investigate and make decisions on issues related to school bus transportation, and is composed of administrators, parents and school bus drivers.
Mrs. Johnson said that the team has held a number of meetings in the past year, and that attendance is generally 15 people or so. The team first looked at existing policies, procedures and rules, and she said that team members agreed that these were acceptable, but that their implementation needed to be more strictly and more evenly enforced
Mrs. Johnson noted that a survey of parents and drivers was used to develop a set of 14 recommendations, the first of which was to ensure that students are provided with safe transportation to and from school.
One means of helping to promote safety, Mrs. Johnson said, is to install video cameras in each school bus, and she added that a donor has offered to fund the installation of camera boxes and that building principals are investigating the legality of the use of
